Unfortunately it’s the time of year where everybody is sick. Some people are lucky, getting over a cold within a few days (and passing it on to everyone else in the process). I’m not one of those people. When I am feeling ill it usually lasts for a few weeks: which is why I have some tips and tricks to help relieve the symptoms and heal my body a little quicker.

Drink Lots!

One of the most important things to do when you have a cold is drink plenty of fluids. This can help to thin any mucus stuck in your throat too, making it easier for you to breathe.

Get Steamy!

A great way to open up your airways is to fill up a bowl/ sink of boiling water and add a few drops of albas oil to it. Then lay a towel over your head and breathe in the steam. This will not only smell great, but it will loosen any mucus within your nose and throat- making it much easier to breathe. Try and do this for around 5-10 minutes if you can.

Drink Hot Fluids

This is effective for reducing inflammation of your throat. The most popular drink when you have a cold is a hot toddy. This usually consists of a fruit juice, sugar, lemon and a spirit. My recipe is below:

200 ml Orange Juice

2 tbsp. Sugar or Honey

2 tbsp. Lemon Juice

1 shot of Cointreau or brandy (whiskey will work fine too)

Heat up in the microwave (minus the alcohol)  for 2 minutes- keeping an eye on it so it doesn’t bubble over. Add your shot.

Limit yourself to one of these- as too much alcohol can irritate your throat.

Put a warm flannel on your nose

This will help to clear your sinuses- alternatively you can buy hot packs.

Blow Your Nose!

I know it can feel disgusting blowing your nose in public or at work, but you need to do it. The worst thing you can do when you are ill is sniffle. This will cause more blockages in your nose and it will mean that any bacteria can’t leave your body through mucus. The absolute best thing to do is just constantly clear your nose. You will feel better, I promise!

Stay Warm

Wrap up in your fluffiest pjs, cuddle a hot water bottle, take a hot bath and relax!
