**CAUTION- SPOILERS BELOW**

 

By now, most of you will know about the ominous prophecy given to Cersei Lannister when she was a child by Maggy the Frog. But what does it mean?

We already know that most of this prophecy has come true:

“You’ll never wed the prince, you’ll wed the king”

And of course, rather than marrying the young prince Rhaegar Targaryen, she marries King Robert Baratheon.

“You’ll be queen, for a time. Then comes another, younger, more beautiful, to cast you down and take all you hold dear.”

This is most likely referring to Margaery Tyrell, who was married to Joffrey before his explosive demise, and now to her youngest son, Tommen. It can also explain why Cersei was such a bitch to Sansa Stark- possibly fearing she was the one to cast her down.

However, it may just as likely be Daenarys Targaryen, Mother of Dragons, who will fulfill this part of the prophecy. As she has now got a whole new Dothraki army under her belt, as well as the unsullied, and may be receiving a visit from the Greyjoys anytime soon- it seems likely that in the next season we will be seeing a huge change in tide.

“The king will have 20 children and you will have three. Gold will be their crowns . . . gold their shrouds.”

Robert Baratheon was known for being a philanderer, and we know he had many bastards… most notibly Gendry, who unfortunately still hasn’t shown an appearance since last seen on that rowing boat.

And Cersei has had 3 children, with her twin brother Jaime. Joffrey, Mycella and Tommen.

Joffrey, the world’s most hated little git, met a glorious end when poisoned at the hands of our favourite grandma, Olenna Tyrell. The whole world could be heard cheering in unison on this night.

Myrcella died after being poisoned by Ellaria Martell, as revenge for Oberyn’s death in series 4. Many were sad to see her go, especially after her touching moment with Jaime moments before her death.

And then we have little Tommen, the most naive of the 3. He is still alive and kicking at the moment but I’m sure it won’t be too long before he pops his clogs if this part of the prophecy holds up.

But there was another part to Maggy’s sayings- one which has had viewers and readers full of speculation:

“And when your tears have drowned you, the Valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.”

Valonqar means ‘little brother’ in High Valyrian. So the finger immediately points to Tyrion- with the 2 hating eachother, this seems like the obvious choice. However, what if it’s not?

Although Cersei and Jaime are twins, Jaime was born after Cersei- meaning that he is actually also her younger brother. It would be a fitting end for Cersei, being killed by the man she loves, and could prove an interesting twist to future episodes. But why would he want to kill the love of his life? Well, one reddit user has predicted that Cersei will in fact try to burn down King’s Landing.

As we saw in this week’s episode, trial by combat is no longer legal, and this was Cersei’s only real chance at freedom. She has been kept away and isolated from her children all through this series, first being kept away from Mycella’s funeral, and then not being allowed to stand with Tommen. For Cersei, her children are her whole life, and she has mentioned in the past that she would ‘burn cities to the ground’ for them. As Cersei becomes more and more insane, and ultimately tries to burn the sept down- it is possible that Jaime will have to step in to stop her.

What if it isn’t Jaime or Tyrion?

The prophecy states “the Valanqor” not ‘YOUR Valanqor”, so we may not be looking for a direct relative of Cersei’s. This opens up a few possible candidates:

The Stark Children

At one point, Maester Aemon tells Samwell that he was a fool when thinking about ‘The Prince that was Promised’. This is because he should have thought about the fact that High Valyrian is a gender neutral language, meaning that it could just as easily be ‘The Princess that was Promised’. This means that all of the Stark children are candidates. Arya has already added Cersei’s name to her hit list so it wouldn’t be surprising if now that she has fled Braavos (finally), she will come for Cersei.

I personally also feel that poor little Rickon hasn’t had enough excitement in the series yet, and it would be great character development if he was the one who killed her.

Daenarys Targaryen

In the same spirit as Arya, the mother of Dragons is the younger sister of Rhaegar and Viserys Targaryen. She is a big candidate for Cersei’s death.

Aegon Targaryen 

Aegon is the son of Rhaegar and Elia Martell, and is the younger brother of Rhaenys. Many believe Aegon to have been murdered as an infant- however there is a rumour in which Varys and Tyrion orchestrated a child swap, and that Aegon was actually given to exiled Lord Jon Connington, to live across the narrow sea. This isn’t proven but it is a possibility, and he would have every reason to kill Cersei.

Sandor Clegane

After being left for dead by Arya, The Hound has made a comeback after being nursed to health by Brother Ray, played by Ian McShane. After he and his settlement were murdered by the Brotherhood, Sandor has been on the rampage. It is possible that if Sandor does return to King’s Landing, we may all finally see a fight between him and the newly resurrected ‘Gregor Clegane’, now Robert Strong. Which in my opinion will be a great sight to see.

Brienne of Tarth

Younger sister of Galladon,Brienne is sworn to protect the Stark girls, and if Cersei gets in the way, then she may be forced to kill her.

Benjen Stark

The younger brother of Ned, Benjen disappeared whilst out North of the Wall. The two men who accompanied him were found shortly afterwards, both dead. Since then, we have all been waiting for a sighting of the youngest Stark.

And then the moment came in series 6 when our prayers were answered. Benjen explains to Bran and Meera that he was stabbed in the gut with ice by the White Walkers and left to die, only to be saved by the Children of the Forest- who shoved a shard of Dragonglass into his chest. It is still uncertain what Benjen has become, but if he learns of his brother’s and nephews fate, he may take matters into his own hands.

Tommen Baratheon

This may be the most intriguing of all, what if Cersei is killed by her own son? And how can this be possible if she has to see him to die before she is killed? Well, we know of a few cases of resurrection within westeros, most notibly those of Beric Dondarion and our favourite northerner Jon Snow.

And we know that Cersei has dabbled in this herself, by getting Qyburn to bring the Mountain back to life, even if not as glamorous as the Red Priestess’ attempt. So, what if Tommen is killed, and Cersei brings him back to life. But Tommen isn’t the same anymore, and he goes on to strangle his mother?

As you can see, a hell of a lot of people want to see Cersei dead.

And I personally feel that is is most likely to be either Jaime or Daenarys, although I would like to see Tommen get his hands dirty for once.
