It’s official, I finish my Digital Marketing Apprenticeship in one month! It’s crazy to think that I have been working in this job for nearly a year, meaning that I have also been blogging for nearly a year (I started my blog in January). I have learned so much over such a short space of time, about social media, business, blogging, networking… the list goes on. It feels like only last week that I had my interview, only to be phoned up an hour later for a second interview the next day. That was on the Tuesday, and I had the job by Wednesday. I still worked at Costco at the weekends, so I went in an handed in my notice on the Wednesday, worked my final weekend and started my new job on the Monday! Let’s just say it was a pretty hectic week!
Anyway, I have something else to confess… I’ve entered Britain’s got Talent. I have been singing since before I could walk (probably), and I have FINALLY taken the leap and been brave enough to apply. I have talked about my singing in the past, in this post. As I have mentioned about a MILLION times… Autumn is the best. And what I really love about the colder months is creating feminine hairstyles to match thick knitted jumpers and tartan scarves. This month is really where braids come into their own, and there are a ton of styles you can create in less than 10 minutes to set you up for the day.
Today I want to show you this Messy Braided Bun I created at the weekend. I am usually very fussy with my hair, and when I create a style such as this, I get annoyed with it after about 30 minutes and take it out. But I actually left this one in all day, so thought I would share it with you!
This style is easier than it looks and only takes 10 minutes to do! It’s stylish, practical and pretty… what more could you want?
What you’ll need:
- A Hairbrush or Comb (wide tooth)
- 5-6 Bobby Pins
- 1 Seamless hair tie (I recommend these ones)
- 1 small hair elastic
1.I recommend starting off this style with slightly curly or wavy hair, this way it will look more messy and textured. First of all, if you have bangs or face framing pieces of hair, separate these off and clip them out of the way.
2. Take a rectangle of hair from the front of your head, this will be for your braid. Don’t take hair from beyond the ear for this.
3. Gather the rest of your hair and secure it with a hair tie, out of the way. Taking 3 small sections from the top of your head, begin to DUTCH braid. This means that instead of taking the pieces over the middle, you’ll be taking them underneath. This is a great way of making a braid stand out more. Add in small pieces as you go, until you have included the whole section into your braid. Remember here to angle your braid away from your face, as this will be where it will go later on.
4. Continue the braid until you reach the end of your hair, secure with an elastic. This part is optional, but I like to pull on the strands of my braid to make it look more messy and thicker. This is a technique known as Pancaking. Once you are happy with how your braid looks, we can move onto the bun.
5. At the back of your head, take your hair (apart from the braid) and and gather it in your hand, making sure that the bobble is on your wrist ready. As you pull the bobble through the hair for the first time, don’t pull it through to the end. Instead, pull it halfway, and then twist the bobble and now gather your hair into a messy bun and secure the bobble over it. This way you have a much more natural, messy bun, and the bobble won’t pull at your hair too much because the hold on your hair is loose.
6. Bobby pin any stray pieces of hair into the bun. *PRO TIP* Spray your bobby pins with hairspray to help hold hair in place
7. Position your braid over the bun, and wrap it around gently. Bobby pin it in place.
8. The front pieces of course are down to preference, but I didn’t want them loose over my face, so I am clipping them in loosely to each side of my face, pulling out any baby hairs as I go to make it look more effortless. Once you are happy, you’re done!
