How I Maintain My Red Hair

Hello everyone!

Today I wanted to talk about something people ask me a lot- how do I keep my natural red hair so bright? And what is my general hair care routine. I thought I would combine the two into one post for today because they come hand in hand for me.

Cool Rinsing

When I wash my hair, I never have the water too warm, because it damages my hair and dries it out. The best way I find with my hair is to wash with warm water- add conditioner to the bottom half of my hair- and then rinse that under cool water. I mean, water as cold as you can physically handle. This is way more gentle on your hair and leaves it much more glossy and soft.

Cinnamon

Sometimes if I want to spruce my hair colour up quickly, I will take a tsp of cinnamon and mix it with some shampoo, then wash my hair and leave the shampoo in for a few minutes before rinsing. This helps bring out the red in your hair and make it more vibrant.

Colour Protecting Shampoo and Conditioner

Believe it or not, products that are made for coloured hair are perfect for redheads. Your colour might not be from a bottle but the principle of protecting your colour is still the same. I always use a colour protecting shampoo and conditioner these days and it makes a huge difference.

Don’t Wash it too Often

I wash my hair twice a week, maybe 3 if I REALLY have to. Washing your hair every day is the number one cause of dry, flaky and weak hair. This is because you are stripping your hair of it’s essential oils before they even have a chance to sink into your strands and moisturise your hair. If you struggle with leaving your hair more more than a day at first, take it slow. You can try and leave it a day to start with, and gradually work your way up to 3 or even 4 days if you’re brave. It might sound horrible to leave your hair that long, but it does wonders for your scalp and your hair!

Hair Oil

Each night before I go for a shower, I use some of my DIY Hair Oil and work it into the bottom half of my hair to protect it from any steam while I shower. Applying oil into my hair every night fights against dryness and helps to keep my hair healthy and thick.

What do you to to keep your hair healthy and vibrant?
